Amy Winehouse was a British singer-songwriter known for her powerful contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz. She was born to a Jewish family, who were the source of her interest in jazz.
She was the younger of two children, older brother Alex, and Janis. When Amy was nine, her grandmother suggested she attend the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School. Winehouse appeared in an episode of The Fast Show in 1997, and later attended Southgate and Ashmole School.
At 3:54 pm, on 23 July 2011, two ambulances were called to her home in Camden, London. The Metropolitan Police confirmed Amy Winehouse death. Media appeared as crowds gathered near her residence to pay their respects. Fans and celebrities said: We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician.
